IVP Embryologist  

Based in Ormiston, East Lothian

Animal Breeding Europe Limited is a leading UK based company specialising in artificial insemination, in-vitro production of embryos and embryo transfer in both sheep and cattle. We are seeking an enthusiastic individual to join our cattle reproductive team based near Edinburgh.

Working as part of a small team you would be required to have great interpersonal and communication skills, as well as the ability to work independently. The position has elements of laboratory and field work so the candidate will ideally have experience working within a laboratory environment, and have handled embryos/gametes previously. The right candidate would need to demonstrate great attention to detail, accurate record-keeping skills and be flexible to work with the commercial nature of the business.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Undertaking all routine embryology tasks in the laboratory including the processing, freezing & thawing of gametes and embryos. 
  • Providing embryology assistance to team veterinarians on farm with collecting oocytes/thawing embryos. 
  • Providing the cleaning & maintenance of laboratory equipment/ surfaces on a regular basis 
  • Reliable and accurate data entry/ record keeping 
  • Ensuring precise quality control & monitoring in all tasks 
  • Stock-taking, and handling of embryos & semen frozen stores


Qualifications and Experience 

Previous experience in an IVP Laboratory environment would be advantageous. Working as part of a small team you would be required to have good interpersonal skills and must be able to work alone. A qualification in agriculture or animal science is not essential but may be helpful. A good telephone manner is also required alongside basic computer literacy. 

Hours of work

The normal hours of work are 36.5hrs per week, usually based around usual office hours of 8.30am – 5pm Mon – Thurs and 8.30 – 4pm on a Friday. Work can be seasonal and additional hours may be required in the high season which can be taken as days off in lieu in the low season, some overtime payment will usually be made.  


The post is based in Edinburgh.  There may be some requirement to collect staff from/to the airport so the job holder should hold a full, clean driving licence. In the high season and dependent on the programming some off site tech work may be required; accommodation will be paid for along with reasonable expenses submitted in line with the expenses policy. 


This is a full-time, salaried position for which the salary will be dependent on experience. The remuneration package includes 33 days leave (including bank holidays), death in service benefit and a 4% pension contribution.
