RAM SHED TECHNICIAN/STOCKPERSON

Location: East Mains, Ormiston, East Lothian, EH35 5NG

Department: Ram Shed

Reporting to: Ram Shed Co-ordinator

MAIN PURPOSE

The position will involve being responsible for the care and husbandry of client’s ewes and rams on centre. Ensuring animals under our care are maintained to the highest health and husbandry standards. Assisting with daily semen collections and assessment, donor ewe synchronisation programmes and on occasion, assisting vets and technicians with artificial insemination and embryo transfer on centre. A passion and knowledge of the sheep industry and pedigree livestock would be advantageous.

MAIN DUTIES

  • Being responsible for the care and husbandry of client’s rams and ewes on centre

  • Shed preparation and upkeep

  • Ram semen collections

  • Semen freezing

  • Assistance in maintenance of semen tanks

Qualifications and Experience

Working as part of a small team you would be required to have good interpersonal skills and must be able to work alone and within a team. A qualification in agriculture or animal science is not essential but may be helpful. Good communication and customer service is also required alongside basic computer literacy.  

Hours of work

The normal hours of work are 36.5hrs per week, based around usual office hours of 8.30am – 5pm Monday – Thursday and 8.30am – 4pm on a Friday. Weekend hours as part of a rota. Work can be seasonal and additional hours may be required in the high season which can be taken as days off in lieu in the low season. The option for payment of overtime will be in line with contract terms.

Travel

The successful candidate should hold a full, clean driving license. There may be, on occasion, some off-site work when assisting on farm, and accommodation will be paid for along with reasonable expenses submitted in line with the expenses policy.

Remuneration

This is a full-time, salaried position for which the salary will be dependent on experience. The remuneration package includes 33 days leave (including bank holidays), death in service benefit and a 4% pension contribution which will increase dependant on length of service.

SEMEN AND OFFICE CO-ORDINATOR/ ADMINISTRATOR

Location: Ledbury, Herefordshire, HR8 1RZ

Department: Office and Sheep Team

Reporting to: Centre Manager

MAIN PURPOSE

The position will involve you being the first point of call for all client enquiries, taking semen/embryo orders and being responsible for all the semen and embryo movements between ABE teams and other companies. The successful person will be required to perform various administrative and clerical tasks to support the running of our Ledbury office.

MAIN DUTIES

– First point of call for client enquiries
– Taking semen/embryo orders over phone or via email
– In charge of all semen and embryo movements between ABE teams and other companies
– Tank management of domestic and export tanks
– Updating our semen/embryo database
– Full semen/embryo tank audits
– Responsible for client drug orders/distribution
– Monitor and ordering stock for veterinary teams

– Other general office tasks

VETERINARY SURGEON

Reporting to: Veterinary Team Leader and Centre Manager

MAIN PURPOSE

Working as part of a small team, you will be required to have excellent interpersonal skills. An MRCVS qualification is essential and experience in small ruminant surgery would beneficial. The highly seasonal nature of the work means that the post may suit an individual who wishes to combine a full-time role with other work / travel outside of the peak season. 

 The successful candidate will be provided with training in artificial breeding services, as follows:

 Inducing and monitoring general anaesthetic procedures in sheep and goats

  • Semen collection and handling, semen freezing and thawing, semen assessment and its practical application within an AI programme
  • Ram fertility examinations and ewe reproductive health advice
  • Advanced reproductive technologies including laparoscopy, artificial insemination, OPU, embryo recovery and transfer.
  • Specific pre- and post- operative care and advice to clients

 Previous training in Ai or ET would be advantageous but not necessary.

 It is understood that the initial training period may take 1 – 2 years before the successful candidate will be able to provide these services on a commercial basis and become a registered Team Leader.
