Ram Shed Technician

Based in Belfast, Northern Ireland

Animal Breeding Europe Limited is a small UK based company specialising artificial insemination and embryo transfer in both sheep and cattle. We are seeking a young enthusiastic individual to join our team base in Belfast to help with the running of our ram stud. The individual will need practical experience in sheep farming and handling.

Working as part of a small team you would be required to have good interpersonal skill and be able to work alone. A qualification in agriculture or animal science is not essential but maybe helpful. The highly seasonal nature of the work means that the post may suit an individual who wishes to combine a full time role with other work / travel outside of the peak season.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Support the day to day activities to ensure the smooth operation of the ram stud, the collection facility, laboratories and semen store. The daily tasks include the general day to day management of rams, semen collecting, processing, freezing and maintaining the semen store.
  • Operation of semen freezing laboratory & semen freezing equipment: maintenance of semen storage facilities.
  • Ensuring clients’ rams under the care of AB Europe are maintained to the highest health and husbandry standards and that all protocols and procedures are implemented.
  • Ensuring all records associated with the ram shed are recorded and maintained .i.e. movement document, entry document and drug records. 
  • Provide assistance to our vet teams carrying out artificial insemination and embryo transfer on farms throughout UK and Ireland 

The normal hours of work are 36.5hrs per week, office hours of 8.30am – 5pm Mon – Friday.

Veterinary Surgeon Required

Animal Breeding Europe Limited is a multi-centre, UK-based company specialising in advanced reproductive technologies. We provide artificial breeding services throughout the UK and Ireland from our three centres (Edinburgh, Malvern, Belfast). Our services include artificial insemination, embryo transfer and IVF/IVP in sheep, goats, cattle and alpaca. We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our veterinary team, to help provide our expanding artificial breeding services throughout the UK and Ireland. This is an excellent opportunity to further your interest in reproductive technologies.

Working as part of a small team, you will be required to have excellent interpersonal skills. You will be an MRCVS and experience in small ruminant surgery would be of benefit. Practical experience in handling sheep and cattle is a necessity. The highly seasonal nature of the work means that the post may suit an individual who wishes to combine a full-time role with other work / travel outside of the peak season. This position will require the applicant to work in both UK and Ireland and, on occasion, internationally.

The successful candidate will be given full training to provide artificial breeding services, as follows:

  • Inducing and monitoring general anaesthetic procedures in sheep and goats
  • Pre- and post- operative care and advice to clients
  • Semen collection and handling, semen freezing and thawing, semen assessment and its practical application within an AI programme
  • Ram fertility examinations and ewe reproductive health advice
  • Advanced reproductive technologies including laparoscopy, artificial insemination, OPU, embryo recovery and transfer.

It is understood that the initial training period may take 1 – 2 years before the successful candidate will be able to provide these services on a commercial basis and become a registered Team Leader 

Additional information

The normal hours of work are 36.5 hrs per week, office hours of 8.30am – 5pm, Mon – Fri, but the seasonal nature of the service provided will require a great deal of flexibility by the candidate. Salary commensurate with experience. Annual leave 33 days inclusive of bank holidays.  Accommodation whilst working away from your allocated office base will be provided.  A full and clean driving licence is essential.
